Pastoral Care

A philosophy of pastoral care will help you in your physical and spiritual journey of healing and wholeness

Spiritual and emotional needs of patients, their families and hospital staff are addressed by the Department of Pastoral Care of the Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation.

The department's chaplains serve the Baptist Memorial hospitals in Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas, and interact with 230 volunteer chaplains in the Baptist system.

Pastoral CareWhen life threatening medical emergencies, deaths, and other crises occur, the chaplains respond to offer comfort and spiritual and emotional counsel. Chaplains facilitate numerous support groups for patients, families, and staff. They conduct Sunday morning worship services at both Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis locations. These worship services are seen over closed circuit television. Worship services are also held at the Baptist Rehab in Memphis and Germantown, Tennessee and at Baptist Memorial Hospital DeSoto in Southaven, Mississippi.

Literature such as daily devotions, prayer books, grief books, and children's books, are provided by the department. A new program has recently been initiated which would place scripture plaques in patient rooms at Memphis Baptist Hospitals.

Service First Coin

Service First CoinThe Department of Pastoral Care developed the Service First Coin as part of Baptist Memorial Health Care’s Service First program. In December of 1998, members of the department began using these coins to encourage and recognize employees who exemplify The Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Coins are given to staff members who are observed performing outstanding acts of customer service. The goal is for this corporate-wide program to be a unique demonstration of appreciation for those employees who uphold the high standards of Service First.
